It really does not matter what you do, as long as you enjoy doing it. An ex-colleague of mine at an old job I once had told me that he hated it when people said stuff like that. However, between you and I, he hated his job.
We all hear passionate people say that you need to stop doing what you don’t like to do and start doing what you do like to do. However, the fact is that most of us cannot simply uproot our lives or completely change our careers. We have bills to pay. Even the closest people to us, like family and friends, worry that we are making smart and safe career decisions. People will tell you not to rock the boat, or to be happy with what you have. Even changing your career direction a little can be a daunting task. As many of you read this, some of you sitting in your office, consider this age-old question: Do you work to live or live to work?
Now, I’m not telling you to stop everything and change your life completely today. However, you can start to look for the smaller changes you want from your career for personal long-term growth, success and fulfilment. All you need to do is take a moment and figure out a way to start moving towards the changes you see.
- Are you a professional looking for higher quality work? Find it.
- Do you want more ‘me-time’ on the weekend? Take it.
- Do you like to paint? Paint with all the colors you can think of.
I will tell you one thing that is very obvious, but many people keep forgetting it: “When you stop doing what you don’t like to do, you are left with the things you do like to do”. I personally created a “Not To Do” list, and I encourage anyone to do the same. Just be careful, and make sure to keep your daily focus on what you like to do, and don’t dwell the things you don’t.
